Top 5: The largest projects begun in Denmark in 2024

In line with Denmark’s continued growth and constant development, the construction industry is in full swing transforming the landscape, and there are constantly new construction projects that see the light of day.

With an ever-increasing focus on sustainability, innovative solutions and modern design, 2024 has been an exciting year for major construction projects in the country. Initiatives ranging from ambitious renovations to impressive infrastructure projects will not only improve the quality of life for Danes, but also strengthen economic growth.

In this article, Projektagenten presents the five largest construction and civil engineering projects in Denmark, which have either started or where the first sod has been broken in 2024. Read on to gain insight into the most exciting construction projects that have shaped and will continue to shape the Danish landscape.

Largest: I/S Vestforbrænding, expansion of the district heating network – DKK 6,3 billion

I/S Vestforbrænding plans to expand the district heating network in its supply area from 2023 to 2030 in accordance with the Heating Plan 2030. The aim of the plan is to establish district heating for approx. 30,000 new customers spread over seven owner municipalities. The expansion is carried out in two stages:

  • Stage 1 extends from 2023 to 2027 and includes approx. 15,500 customers.

  • Stage 2 is expected to run from 2026 to 2030.

 

The project for stage 1 consists of three sub-contracts, each of which entails a total contract regarding the expansion of the district heating network in different geographical areas. The work includes distribution networks, branch lines and customer installations and is divided into the following contracts:

Total contract 1: Ballerup and Herlev municipalities (approx. 5,900 customers).

Total contract 2: Lyngby-Taarbæk and Gladsaxe municipalities (approx. 6,100 customers).

Total contract 3: Furesø, Egedal and Frederikssund municipalities (approx. 3,360 customers).

Second largest: Denmarks Nationalbank, restoration and renovation – DKK 2,8 billion

Denmarks Nationalbank’s headquarters in Copenhagen, designed by Arne Jacobsen and listed in 2009, is undergoing extensive restoration and renovation. This project, which is the largest since the construction of the building, must both preserve the cultural and historical value and update the building to modern standards.

The restoration is divided into three main areas:

  1. Interior works: Environmental remediation, indoor climate design and fire protection
  2. Exterior works: Renovation of marble facades, glass facades and concrete
  3. Buoyancy protection: Reinforcement of basement walls and installation of ground anchors

 

The project ensures that the building can stand as an icon for Danish architecture for many years to come, while at the same time adapting it to today’s working environment requirements.

 

Third largest: Expansion of E45 between Aarhus S and Aarhus N – DKK 2,112 billion

On this part of E45, there are four connection facilities with ramps that direct traffic to and from the intersecting roads. In addition, there are three major intersections. The intersections connect the E45 with the Aarhus Syd highway (Route 501), the Herning highway (Route 15) and the Djurslands highway (Route 15). With the project, the 16 km long section between Aarhus S and Aarhus N will be expanded from 4 to 6 tracks.

As part of the project, it is planned to set up approx. 5 km noise screen and installation of 3.5 km noise barriers in several places on the stretch where there are many nearby homes. The project has an estimated construction cost of DKK 2,112 billion. The project has a positive return of 7.1 per cent. calculated with a CO2 price of approx. DKK 300 per ton. For a CO2 price of DKK 1,500. per ton, the yield is 7.0 per cent.

Fourth largest: Det Nye Sølund – DKK 1,7 billion

‘Det Nye Sølund’ is an ambitious building project for Samvirkende Boligselskaber (SAB), which includes the construction of 360 care homes, 150 youth homes, 22 homes for the elderly, a day care center and several commercial leases. The total area of ​​49,386 m² will be distributed in a square development with nine buildings around three courtyards.

Under the buildings, a basement will be built with, among other things, a storage room, a technical room and a parking garage with 189 parking spaces, of which 122 are public and 67 are reserved for residents. The project is being carried out in two stages and is expected to be completed in 2029, while the existing Sølund will continue to operate during construction.

This project will not only modernize and improve care homes in Copenhagen, but also contribute with new youth housing and commercial areas, making it an important part of urban development.

 

Fifth largest: Rødovre Almennyttige Boligselskab’s dept. Carlsro, renovation – DKK 885,4 million

Carlsro consists of 596 terraced houses and the Langhuset with 304 apartments, one of Arne Jacobsen’s lesser-known works from 1952-57. The extensive renovation upgrades the homes to modern standards with a focus on energy optimization and improved functionality.

The terraced houses

Facades, gables, roofs and chimneys are renovated with additional insulation and installation of new skylights. The heating system is upgraded with central control, and new sewage and water installations are established. The terraced houses D and E are combined into new housing types, which include new floor constructions, kitchens and bathrooms as well as ventilation systems and renovated installations and windows.

Langhuset

Kitchens, bathrooms and risers are updated, while drains and the sewer system are renovated. The heating system is being modernized, including an upgrade of the central heating system. Swallow corridors and colonnades will be partially covered, and the sound conditions in light apartment divisions will be improved to increase comfort. The common areas are being upgraded with new electrical installations. Some homes are converted into senior housing communities with accessible housing, while others become youth housing. 68 homes will be demolished as part of the project.

This project transforms an aging residential area into a modern and sustainable district with respect for Arne Jacobsen’s architectural heritage.
